The Blackbird lyrics, though short, are very puzzling whilst the tune on the other hand has a simple, mostly pentatonic structure belying its traditional folk music antecedents. Puzzle over the following lines, dear surfer.
"Blackbird singing in the dead of night, ...", what can that mean, I wonder. Avian blackbirds do no not sing at night, or is some other kind of blackbird intended. A distressed Liverpudlian "coloured lady" (no offence intended) or perhaps a slave in former times?
And what on earth does
"Take these broken wings and learn to fly"
mean, at its face value it's clearly impossible to fly with broken wings, so what can the poor creature learn? Just one conundrum after an other!
